Hello! I am Mary Cowx, an Assistant Professor of accounting at Arizona State University. Thanks for visiting this page.
A bit about me:
I grew up in northeast Ohio and spent ten years working in tax before shifting to academia. I served in various tax roles over my ten-year professional career, including Tax Manager at both KPMG and the Hearst Corporation. During this time, I worked on tax compliance, tax planning, and tax reporting for a very diverse base of businesses, including mid-sized tire manufacturers, international steel companies, and multinational media giants. FIN 48 will always hold a special place in my heart.
I “retired” from tax practice in 2015 to pursue a career in academia. I completed my PhD in Accounting at The Ohio State University in 2021. Currently, I am an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University.
Given my professional background, it is no surprise that my research interests are largely tax-related. Currently, I am researching innovation-related tax policies, tax enforcement mechanisms, and the role of taxes in investment decision-making.
In my free time, I enjoy vegetarian cooking (Indian food is a favorite), traveling (recently visited Edinburgh and Paris), backpacking (recently tackled the Grand Canyon South Rim), and running as much as my knees will permit. Knees are the worst.
My last name is pronounced “Cox” — the ‘w’ is silent.
